What you need to know when purchasing curtain rods
If you are in the market for new window treatments, it's worth your time to learn a few basic things about curtain rods. How to measure, how and where to hang them, and what style of curtain rod to select are just a few areas you will want to be familiar with before you begin a decorating project.
Measuring up
Measuring for curtain rods doesn't have to be complicated. The easiest way to do it is to start by measuring the width of the window. From there, you may want to add a few inches on either side to ensure that when the curtains are closed no light sneaks through.
Consider one other factor when measuring for curtain rods: finials. If the curtain rods you are using are already equipped with them, it may not be an issue. If they are not, you may need to add that into your final measurement.
Don't get hung up on hanging
The key to hanging curtain rods correctly is to take the time to think about the final look you are trying to create. Generally speaking, most decorators will tell you to hang them high enough so that the curtains or drapery cover the top of the windows or even a few inches above. However, there are circumstances when it is appropriate to hang them higher or even lower.
When it comes to where to hang curtain rods, the same philosophy applies. It depends on the look you are trying to create. Do all windows need their own curtain rod? No. Sometimes windows are grouped so close together that it makes more sense to you use a single rod and treat it as a single window.
Choosing a style
In order to create a cohesive look, it's important to consider the decor of the entire room when selecting a curtain rod. If the room is fairly casual, then a formal curtain rod featuring an intricate finial might look a little out of place.
